Dr. Hermann J. Stern opened his law office at Raemistrasse 5, 8001 in Zurich on 1 September 1977, which today operates under STERN.LAW and is led by Andrea Werder. In his dissertation, he focused on copyright aspects of cable television. From 1973 to 1977, he was the President of the Swiss Association of Copyright Law. As a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and in his capacity as Head of the Legal Department of the Swiss collecting society SUISA, he worked to establish a worldwide recognition of cable television rights.
He led the first leading case for the recognition of cable rights. And after the cable rights were confirmed by the Federal Supreme Court (Federal Supreme Court Decision 107 II 82 et. seq.), he took on the task of enforcing these rights in Switzerland. To this end, he founded a common interest group for national and international broadcasters (“IRF”) of which he was the CEO until the end of 2016. In addition to his work as a copyright expert, for over 30 years he worked in the fields of M&A, corporate law and inheritance law. From 1 January 2017 to 30 June 2020 he was a consultant at STERN.LAW. He retired on 1 July 2020 and is no longer active as a lawyer.
